Who is your ideal client?

A small business owner that is looking to grow, take the next step, do things a little differently than they have been.

How did you get started in your field of work?

Honestly, I fell into marketing and promotions as a whole.  I was either going to be a radio DJ or a rock star.  I figured out that my voice wasn't suited for the radio and that my guitar playing wasn't anywhere near as good as Eddie Van Halen's.  I went back to school for an MBA (no small feat for a communications major) and through a series of right, wrong, planned and unplanned turns I landed where I am today.

What is something people THINK they know about your job?

I heard someone say about marketing folks, "Some people spend the money and some people make the money."

Name one thing you WISH people knew about your job?

Marketing is not necessarily a sunk cost like a piece of equipment.  Labor hours themselves are not themselves the be all and end all to crafting and executing marketing.  Marketers need tools to get their jobs done well, effectively and efficiently.

What do you love most about your job?

By far it's meeting people who are making things happen and running their show. I've met a number of creative people. Creativity shows itself in a number of ways. I also love that they take thoughtful risks.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your industry?

Specialization is seems to be the only way to fly these days in marketing, I'd encourage young professionals to get comfortable with different facets of marketing. As small businesses grow, they'll look for someone who has a broad skill set.

What is the ONE book that you think I should read RIGHT NOW?

I'm not big on self-improvement or motivational books. I prefer to read biographies and autobiographies. It's always interesting to read real stories, even if I don't always agree with the interpretation.
