Wauwatosa West HS Class of 2021 | Derek
One of my absolute favorite things about being a people-photographer is finding that magic button for each of my subjects. One time, a little boy was absolutely fanatic over fart jokes. (Seriously. The parents gave me full permission to tell all the fart jokes I wanted and the kid was putty in my hand!)
In Derek’s case, thankfully, I didn’t have to come prepared with any gross jokes. As I worked with him through his session, I learned by watching. As anyone who steps in front of my camera - or ANY camera - Derek was a little uncomfortable. It’s totally normal. We were doing photos with his trombone so I had him pick it up and play it.
BAM.
That was it. When he was even just holding the instrument, he appeared more at ease. It was magical. And so, I went with it. These portraits capture him at a time in his life that he is passionate about music. So passionate, he didn’t want to let go.
I hope you love his photos as much as I do. Here is the talented and kind Derek. He is graduating with the class of 2021 from Wauwatosa West High School.
