What to Wear | March 2014

This is an awkward time of year for getting dressed. We all have spring on the brain - not only because we are SICK. AND. TIRED. of winter but also because, well... look at the date. It will be March in two days. Spring starts (officially, according to the lying-cheating-calendar) in 22 days.

So in case you've been living in a windowless basement or you reside in San Diego, you probably don't get what's so awkward part about getting dressed this time of year. We are experiencing SUB-ARCTIC TEMPERATURES. Today, for example, if the actual temperature reaches above 0 (zero!) we will probably be forced to jump for joy. Yet, earlier this morning I used the words "dress Spring-y" to a client. NOT RIGHT. Stores are starting to show florals and pastels and - gasp! - open toed shoes! Yet we are all shivering in our wool-blend turtlenecks.

I thought I'd cheer you up by posting a bonus What to Wear guide for March. This is the outfit you would want to wear to a (supposed) Spring photo shoot even when you apparently live in Hoth. Fake it till you make it... to Spring.

Spring flowers that still read "winter". Knee-high boots to cover your cold legs. And a happy, red cardigan. (Full length down coat will be removed before a single shutter is snapped.)

Schedule a March session and give yourself an excuse to buy some new in-between-seasons clothes. Check the calendar for available dates or contact me to request an appointment date. Until the shivering ceases, we will be shooting on location inside the warm, cozy studio.

P.S. If you happen to really, really like one of the items above, please don't be mad at me. I use Polyvore where skirts can cost $3,500 and a necklace can run you $35. This site is best for LOOKING not shopping. Unless a $3,500 skirt doesn't bother you. And if that's the case, get one for me, too, while you're at it.

Monday Musing: Why I Photograph

Why do you take pictures?

Oh, it's such a loaded question.

There are SO. MANY. REASONS. I am a documenter. I'm creative. I am visual. I love colors. I love contrast. I appreciate light and lines. I enjoy challenging myself to get that perfect capture. I love interacting with the kids who I photograph (yes, even when they're mine. ESPECIALLY when they're mine. And willing.) I love when I freeze a moment in time, a story stopped in motion.

There are a million more tiny pieces to the puzzle of my WHY. Let me tell you about a big one that I was recently reminded about. It was an A-HA moment for me. "THAT is why I do this," I thought to myself.

It's all about PRINTS

I was talking to a dear friend about the photos from her wedding. (I don't shoot weddings, but it's the general idea that I'm getting at here.) She told me that sure, she liked her wedding pictures, and would love to have them hanging on her walls, in an album, somewhere. I offered to help her hang pictures. No, she told me. They were on the CD that the photographer gave her. She was at a complete loss about what to do with all the hundreds of digital images from her wedding.

And the kicker? She and her husband have been happily married for over ten years

Her wedding pictures may as well not exist, hiding in an envelope, in a box, in a closet in a corner of her house that she hardly frequents. Covered with dust. So sad.

This is why I offer a variety of print options to my clients. I want you to enjoy the pictures that you paid for. I want them hanging on your wall, displayed on your desk, in a book on your coffee table. I want you to be filled with joy when you see your kids, frozen in time, smiling and happy and staring back at you.

THIS. You want THIS on your walls.

THIS. You want THIS on your walls.

Every session I shoot automatically includes a free 8x12 "Story Framed", ready to hang on your wall. You choose the image, I deliver it to you framed.

If in ten years you still haven't hung your framed family portrait, the only possible reason could be that you ran out of nails. If that's the case, maybe I'll have to start providing nails with each order...

Come back soon and read about another A-HA moment. The next one may be all TOO relatable for you.

P.S. In the meantime, get on my schedule for this spring. You know you need your family pictures, just email me and get them scheduled. Starting is the hardest part - you can do it! CLICK HERE. OR HERE

Stories Framed Photography Hits the Road

LOOK OUT, NEBRASKA!

{April 25-27, 2014}

If you know me (or have read my profile) you know that we have lived in several states throughout the Midwest... before we invaded Wisconsin, we took up residence in Nebraska for over eight years. The truth is, I actually miss Nebraska. I miss the early (or is it "on time"?) Spring, the beautiful skies, the plethora of red vehicles (Go Huskers!) Lazlo's, and of course, the people. I miss my people.

So.... I'm taking Stories Framed Photography and hitting the road! I will be in Omaha and Lincoln to visit friends and shoot some sessions. Look out Nebraska and clear your calendars for Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, 2014.

If you would like to sign up for one of my family photo sessions, senior pictures or even just an updated headshot, email me ASAP. As in TODAY. Don't delay - once my slots are all filled, that's all there is. See below for approximate appointment times.

REFER-A-FRIEND

Book your session and then tell your friends! If you refer someone to Stories Framed Photography who books a session for my visit, I will give you BOTH $50 print credits to use toward prints from your session. Yes, that's right...

YOUR FRIEND = $50 PRINT CREDITx2

I'm not very good at Algebra (clearly) but I'm pretty sure you get my drift. If you have been referred, make sure you tell me so everyone gets credit where credit is due.

TIME SLOTS

These are estimates at this point. Within the next few weeks when I start making more solid travel plans, I will revise the times and contact people as needed.

If you want one of the open appointment times, CONTACT ME RIGHT AWAY so I can mark your session time as BOOKED.

Outdoor locations at this point are TBD. Obviously, since this is a one-time thing, if there is inclement weather we will relocate to a safe, dry indoor location.
