HOW AND WHY DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
Birch River Financial was born from a desire to be more than a service provider. I wanted to create a place where our customers feel at home, where each of them are personally known by name. I wanted to create a firm that places more emphasis on people, and less focus on the transaction. A place where their goals are understood and their dreams are supported.
The businesses that people create are amazing, and the myriad ways in which individuals earn income and generate wealth are simply fascinating. Our world is increasingly data-driven and results-oriented, but every successful venture always comes down to the courage, determination, and brilliance of people. I wanted to see and experience a more direct impact on those people. Ultimately, I wanted to better support customers.
WHAT IS A BIG MISCONCEPTION ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY?
One misconception I run into quite a bit is that accounting is easy and that it is just entering numbers into a spreadsheet or software program. So, business owners often take on this task themselves or have a trusted friend or family member do it, which is sometimes necessary when a business is just starting out. However, without the education and experience of a formally trained accountant, those simple transactions can easily be entered incorrectly and quickly spiral into quite the mess.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love talking to business owners about their companies and industries.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Buckle up. The world is changing dramatically. AI platforms are evolving quickly and you need to integrate them into your daily workflow if you want to stay relevant.
WHAT one BOOK WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
Something unrelated to AI or business. Keep art alive. I recommend Stephen King. He is a phenomenal storyteller.
WHAT HOBBIES, SPORTS, PASTIMES DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF WORK?
I love football. Also, my son and I are in the process of visiting all of the NHL arenas.
WHEN AND WHERE WAS YOUR LAST VACATION?
My wife and I went to Alaska for our 20th aniversary.
WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?
A spy or a ninja.
