WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?

For WarHorse Executive Search it is an organization that needs Key Talent to help them grow. For WarHorse Talent it is accomplished business professionals going through a career pivot who need help developing their professional persona and project it.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?

I started as a sales guy in IT staffing. But relatively soon thereafter I realize that the real value was in connecting with people who might be candidates in the present or in the future. So I have been building my networks for the past 25 years of really good people who are amazingly good at what they do.

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE think THEY KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

Most people think that recruiting is pretty easy. It is not easy, especially the kind of executive search that I do.  It is a nonstop process of connecting and building enough relationships with people so that I always have a ready database of great potential candidates for excellent companies, even if those candidates are not in an active job search. I am never NOT working.

On the candidate side, most people who have not been in a job search for the last two or three years have no clue about how the job search works today. Most people assume when they start talking to me that I am going to talk like a traditional recruiter or a traditional executive coach. The value that most people get from me is far higher than what a regular recruiter or career coach could provide.

NAME ONE THING THAT YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

What I think most people don't understand about my job is that I play a long game. In other words a connection that I make today doesn't necessarily bear fruit for that connection nor me for sometimes years. I try NOT to be transactional i.e. just reacting to a position which I am trying to fill. I am much more about the relationship and the connection and so sometimes finding the right opportunity to match with the person doesn't happen overnight.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

On the talent side I love helping people understand their capabilities. On the search side it is making that match between a superb candidate and an excellent company.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

If you're looking to be really valuable in your industry understand that 1. It will take a long time to do so, and 2. It really is all about your network and your connections. They will make you successful as long as you help them be successful.
