POSITION
Musician & Teacher

woman horn player

WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
Families with Children in 1st - 12th Grades

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR FIELD OF WORK?
I am a musician who has been playing piano and French horn on a freelance basis since I graduated from college in 2005. One of my first long-term gigs was as a contemporary church music director, playing keyboard at a church for a number of years. Families at the church enjoyed my music, and started asking whether I would consider teaching their children how to play piano. Although that wasn't my original intent, I've fallen in love with private teaching - on piano and horn. I also continue to play those instruments regularly.

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE think THEY KNOW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Sometimes people think that as a private instructor of piano & horn, I'm "just a piano teacher." Or, "just a horn teacher." I personally put a ton of effort into my own performance opportunities, volunteering in the community (I've done a lot with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra), going to workshops, working with professional organizations, etc. I work hard so that I can be an extremely savvy and connected teacher for my students.

NAME ONE THING THAT YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?
Teaching private music lessons is a big commitment - I save my evenings and weekends for students. I love it - but it does mean I have to miss a lot of other opportunities for networking, going out with friends, occasionally family functions. Be kind to your child's music teacher - they give up a lot to do what they do :-)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
Every student is so different; that forces me to think really creatively on how to teach to his or her individual potential.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Be sure to communicate your expectations to families up front - they don't always know what you need from them, unless you tell them!

WHAT IS THE ONE BOOK THAT YOU THINK I SHOULD READ RIGHT NOW?
David Cutler's The Savvy Musician. Although it's geared toward music business, there are many creative fields that could benefit from the read!

POSITION
Chief Stargazer and Personal Life Navigator

Who is your ideal client?
Someone who is at a crossroads in their life and wants to do something different for a better outcome.

Gully-092018-07-web.jpg

How did you get started in your field of work?
I opened my first astrology book when I was 11.  After 20 years of being a therapist and 30+ years of astrology studies, I figured out a way to sync my two talents.  I adore helping people get to new flashes of insight about their lives.  I can impact an individual more in one astrology session than in 3 months of therapy.

What is something people THINK they know about your job?
It’s not just the sun sign!  It’s so much more than the horoscope in the newspaper.  There are 10 planets and their angles and their positions in time and space that influence everything.  I take the chart of the sky the moment you took your first breath and decode the narrative of your natal talents and life path.

Name one thing you WISH people knew about your job?
Astrology is not fortune telling and it’s not fate.  It’s the ongoing planetary cycles interacting with your personal chart.  I give you information so you can make better life decisions.  Having a personal astrologer is an ongoing relationship.  I get consulted for relationship topics, parenting strategies, fertility, weddings, career decisions, and even year ahead forecasts.

What do you love most about your job?
My clients

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your industry?
Read a ton and find a mentor already in the field. Get a professional reading to see if they are a good fit for you.

What is the ONE book that you think I should read RIGHT NOW?
"The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology" by April Elliot Kent. Its a wonderful introduction book and her writing has a lot of humor.

People think I travel for free, but that is not the case.  I pay for my travel just like everyone else.

Name one thing you WISH people knew about your job?
I work 24/7 even on "vacation".  If a client is traveling, I am monitoring their flights, making sure they get where they are supposed to be.  If there is an issue (even at 2:00 am) I will take care of that.

What do you love most about your job?
Making people happy

Local Business Spotlight | Jo Ann Toporski

NAME
Jo Ann Toporski

COMPANY
Jo Ann Toporski Social Media Management and Web Design

POSITION
Owner

JoAnnToporski-02011803-web.jpg

Who is your ideal client?
Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses

How did you get started in your field of work?
I got started twofold.  I've always had a passion for technology - I'm a Geek :)  And I started giving seminars and training and created a hobby business, The Joy of Computing, in 2007. At the same time, I was also the VP of Sales for an International Software Company and, it became evident that companies, including mine, needed to understand social selling as part of their strategy to grow their business.  So I started working with my company and our partners and customers to understand social selling and LinkedIn.  That grew into my love of other social platforms, and the rest is history.  Of course, there was also a lot of training and certifications needed before I could start my business.

What is something people THINK they know about your job?
Social media management isn’t just about posting content to a business’s social media channels. A good social media manager is not just someone who owns a smartphone and happens to enjoy social media in their personal life. Just because you watch TV doesn’t mean you can produce television ad campaigns, and the same is true for social media.

Name one thing you WISH people knew about your job?
I'm not "just on Facebook" all day and there's no such thing as 9 to 5.

What do you love most about your job?
Helping my clients develop and nurture their online relationships and have success growing their business.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your industry?
Get the foundation knowledge and form relationships with industry influencers.

I'm also a Certified Online Business Manager. This helps me focus on the big picture and bring my expertise in project management, launch management, and team management to help my clients.

What is the ONE book that you think I should read RIGHT NOW?
Known by Mark W. Schaefer and any book by David Meerman Scott

Elm Grove Photography Studio Opening a Grand Success

Elm Grove, WI
Monday morning

Wheeeeeewwww.

That. Was. So. Much. Fun.

I want to give a GIANT THANK YOU to EVERYONE who came to my Thursday evening ribbon cutting with the Brookfield and Wauwatosa Chambers of Commerce. I was overwhelmed by all the people who walked in my doors. I still can't believe ALL OF YOU were there! But I think I know why - you secretly wanted to make sure I really had a photography studio, didn't you? haha. I do, I'm not faking you out!

And then Saturday, I was once again honored to have Local First Milwaukee perform a ribbon cutting at my Open House. We were really lucky to have GORGEOUS weather so we went outside and basked in the sunshine.

A big lesson I learned over the two events... I need to get myself a pair of giant scissors.

Thank you to my friends and family who stopped by on Saturday. The Wauwatosa Mayor, Kathy Ehley, visited me! I couldn't believe she took the time out of her day for little old me.

I have SO many photos to share and there are lots of them floating around on Facebook and Instagram. Are you ready?

Thank you to Jason Brewer for shooting photos on Thursday.... and to my own kiddo, Sam, for "second-shooting".

Here are some moments from Saturday's Open House... however, I didn't have a personal photographer following me around that day.  :)
